THE PRODUCTION
This one-act play, 'Danielle' is set in modern times in the slums of a large metropolitan city. The alleyway severs as the inner city for the homeless dubbed 'Cardboard Town' The play takes place in a 24 hour period from sunrise of day 1 to sunrise on day 2. It is a cold winters morning after a heavy, wet snowfall. The main characters in the play are Gus Kelly - a homeless Irishman who once worked for the railway but having fallen to the bottle he is one of Cardboard Town's regular residents and Danielle Dorrance a woman in her early 30's currently in transition from a male to a female. Danielle has finished her hormone therapy and is continuing with her mental health counselling over the last 18 months. She is now ready to move on to the next stage of he transition. She has been experiencing some anxiety and depression as a result of her decision and on being removed from her comfortable home - approximately 9 month ago - by her father disowning his child because of her decision to leave her male persona behind and become a functioning woman. Gus and Danielle meet for the first time on this winter morning. Gus believes that Danielle is a woman and he treats her like a the fatherly figure he once was, giving her street advice and warning her of the dangers of being a woman out on the streets. Danielle does not let on that she still retains some of her male features - a penis and scrotum - allowing Gus to continue his role as the unseen parent and alley Wiseman. The two discuss poverty, some politics, family, the state of the world and a bit of sports - Gus is a big football fan - Danielle knows very little about football. The topic finally get around to modern sexuality and how the world has changed. Gus still has the mindset and beliefs of the 60's and 70's where homosexuality was mocked and scorned. Gus is not afraid to give his 60's/70's opinion of that subject. When the subject turns to SLGBTQ Gus again steps up on his soapbox and debates on on evils and debauchery of these types of behaviours. Danielle has finally heard enough and she confronts Gus as to her changing gender. The action rises...
