Get Involved in the Susan Barber Emerging Artists in Residency Program
There are two avenues for participating in the Susan Barber Emerging Artists in Residency Program; as an emerging artist, or as a mentor.
ARTISTS
Have you felt like your artistic passion has been treated as a fun hobby and disregarded by those around you? Does going into the arts feel like a completely insurmountable career path? Are you unsure if you even want to purse art or whether or not it truly is the right choice for you? The best way to find out is to learn what is involved in creating, producing, and presenting artistic work – and get paid for doing it!
This program is designed especially for those who are experiencing producing anything as an artist for the first time and have not yet presented before, or are very early on in their journey. If you are brand new to your craft but you know you want to do this art, you know you want to tell your story, in front of an audience, then apply today! You can fill out an application form here: EMERGING ARTISTS EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Unsure how to get started? Reach out to [email protected] or call 1-705-975-0761 to find out what steps to take. What makes this program different from others?
Fringe North uses sponsorship and grant funding to provide paid opportunities for artists in the program. In particular we would like to thank the The Susan Barber Memorial Trust for making this program possible. We ensure that you are paid fairly and that your work is valued properly. Additionally, you will have opportunity to present your work either live or digitally in our annual festival. All artists presenting shows in our festival receive 100% of ticket sales.
We also work with you to prove resources and services required to complete your project. For example, those artists in the program participating in the digital portion of the festival may be provided with a place to film their creation. We help ensure that you have all the tools you need to succeed. You may be provided with a space to rehearse, create and display your work. Our team will work closely beside you to identify what supports are needed and do our best to make them happen.
Throughout the process Fringe North provides safer spaces to approach art in a holistic manner that allows you to feel safe experimenting with your craft as you learn what stylist choices work best for you. At Fringe North we appreciate the discovery journey and process that leads to the final project seen by audiences. We know that the end result is not always what we have in mind when we first begin. This program gives you the freedom to venture down that path without expectations or curation from our team. You are the owner of your art, and the travel guide to your own trail blazing. The artistic integrity of your project rests in your hands and your own decision making, not ours.
This is your opportunity to peel back the layers and learn how to emerge as a professional in the arts.
MENTORSHIP
Are you looking to give back to the arts community and help build the future of artistic practice in Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario? Becoming a mentor in the Susan Barber Emerging Artists in Residency Program may be for you!
We are looking for mentors who can pass on their knowledge to others, through one-on-one or group coaching and mentorship in a variety of skill sets. This could include nearly any artistic discipline: writing skills, dance techniques, acting, line memorization, comedy, improv, music, storytelling, etc. Mentorship is needed not just for artists who are presenting, but on the production side as well. Help emerging talent learn stage lighting, sound, directing skills, camera angles etc.
You can work with emerging artists independently or provide group workshops in the following ways (and more!):

You can work with emerging artists independently or provide group workshops in the following ways (and more!):
- Help up and coming and emerging artists better hon their skills in all areas
- Provide training for those who may not have had opportunities to learn
- Guide and teach emerging artists how to engage with production, creation, and presentation in various levels
- Impart knowledge
- Help artists better understand their story and how to translate it into their work
- Provide tools and strategies on how to market themselves
- Plant the seed of professionalism to help emerging artists recognize art as a viable career path
All mentors are asked to give ongoing feedback and support to the artists in kind caring loving ways that promote building safer and braver spaces. It is vitally important to respect and match the pace of learning that allows each unique artist to develop their craft in ways that feel uplifting and empowering to them.
Please note that certain mentorship roles may require a background check to ensure safety for vulnerable populations.
How does becoming a mentor benefit you?
Learning is a two way street. As a mentor you will gain knowledge and experience that helps you better understand your own journey and how to articulate the key elements of your own art. Becoming a mentor is one of the most rewarding experiences an artist can have.
Developing connections and deep relationships with artists will help further your own networking skills and opportunities. Their relationships you build with artists will also leave a legacy and ripple effect for years to come, even after you are gone. For a thorough example of how community building through the arts leaves a legacy please visit our page on Growing the HeART in Community.
Additionally, when funding allows, many mentorship opportunities come with honorariums and payment in exchange for the time you invest. When filling out an application of interest you will be able to indicate whether or not you are interested in paid or unpaid opportunities.
