How A Bear Dies by Jacob Maybe
THE PRODUCTION
Despite the macabre title, "How A Bear Dies" is a (mostly) fun oral story about a backcountry butcher who yearns for respect and renown. He dreams of throwing a legendary dinner party where the main course will be prepared by him, butchered by him, and harvested from his woods, using a bow he's crafted himself. The trouble is, he's never hunted a day in his life and building a reliable bow is not as easy as it seems.
Versions of this story have been honoured by the 20th Annual NOWW Awards, the Oregon Writers Colony Awards, featured in Type A Media's "Isolated Together" anthology, and supported by the Ontario Arts Council.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born and raised in Algoma country, Jacob Maybe loves to get some mud on his boots and some dirt under his nails. His stories usually reflect his hands-on, playful nature, his love for this area's natural beauty, and his abject fear of failing as a parent. His published work includes a children's picture book, an adult murder mystery, and a heap of award-winning short stories and poems. He usually writes his stories down, but loves a chance to take the stage.
Fringe North acknowledges and gives thanks to the Anishinaabe of Bawaating for their generosity, diligence, and patience in sharing, caring for, and carrying on the original teachings of Creation, the truest intentions of the Treaties, honouring the land, the spirits, and the collective dreams of our ancestors since time immemorial.
